Your writing style will change depending on your audience and the purpose of your work. If you are writing an essay or technical document, you should double-check your work for the following:
- Read between the lines! Check for slang and cliches
- Avoid rambling sentences. If you are using Microsoft Word, you can customise the Grammar to check sentence length
- Avoid overuse of Footnotes and/or Brackets. Footnotes and brackets reduce the readability of your document. Of course, it may be necessary to use footnotes
- Brightly coloured text such as yellow, pink or orange should be avoided. These colours are difficult to read on-screen and on paper. It may be necessary to use certain colours as part of your branding, keeping in mind that darker colours are easier to read
- Inconsistency! Use a style guide to ensure consistency in your document. This may include the use of hyphens in words, title case, use of the oxford comma and so on.
